Greetings to you all.
Hopefully you escaped silly day yesterday without too much embarassment.  Seeing we are going Italian this weekend I thought some of you might remember the classic April fools joke staged by the BBC.  It involved a documentary on the fact that the spagetti trees were currently being harvested.

Mr Dimbleby, the narrator, explained how each year the end of March is a very anxious time for Spaghetti harvesters all over Europe as severe frost can impair the flavour of the spaghetti.

He also explained how each strand of spaghetti always grows to the same length thanks to years of hard work by generations of growers.

Needless to say, not the entire British public was amused!

Spagetti Trees
Italian Saturday
We have lined up some great tasting experiences for you this Saturday April 5th between 10h00 and 13h00.
Sapori d'Italia will present their wonderful filled pasta including Pear & Gorgonzola, Roast Chicken and Potato and Ricotta and Spinach.  These hand-made pastas are really good and worth a taste.
Monterosso, run by the De Franchi family,is a very Italian operation that lies on the Koelenhof Ridge, a few kilometres from Stellenbosch. Judith will have their wines for tasting including the unusual Sangiovese.
A new range of olives from Springvale Farm in the Eastern Cape at reasonable prices will be out to taste.  They also have a dried olive ideal for addition to breads or sauces.
To compliment the olives, we have a 4 year old Balsamic vinegar imported from Modena at special prices.  A real Balsamic is so different to the cheap flavoured vinegars.  Experience it!

Tasing of World Championship Cheeses
It may be the wine industry that basks in glory but South African cheeses are taking the world by storm with eight producers taking on the best at the annual 2008 World Cheese Championships held a few weeks ago in Wisconsin, USA.

The 22 local cheeses being nibbled away at by international judges, including SA's "Mr Cheese' and a well-known face on the international judging scene, Kobus Mulder, have so far garnered a number of merits. There were entries from Healey's Cheddar; Klein River Cheese; Lancewood Cheese; Fairview Cheese; Parmalat; Kimilili; Geluksfontein and Belnori Boutique Cheesery.

The Simonsberg Traditional Low fat cream cheese has been adjudged the Worlds best low fat cheese taking a gold medal at the championship and Healey's Traditional Cheddar scooped 4th in its class, a credible placing in what is possibly the most prolific category of all. This follows its Gold Award in the 2006 championships emphasizing the consistency in the product.

The South African producers find themselves on the cutting boards against formidable competitors from eight European countries, the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and New Zealand, some of whom have had a 500-year head start!

We will be celebrating the successes of the USA championships by holding an exclusive tasting evening featuring:
*  8 Cheeses from the farms entered into the World championships
*  Taste-off between competition entrants and other cheeses
*  Award-winning local wines
*  Tasting of different varieties of olives and olive oils

Dinner will consist of predominantly ploughmans platter style eating as well as a hearty soup served during the evening.
